22-year old, David Sacher Finishes 15,000 mile Journey to Save Lives in Africathrough Akerfa, an organization started by 2 college graduates in 2007 to putbicycles in Africa.
David "the Brave” Sacher, from San Diego, CA, embarked on a solo bicycle journeyfrom Prudhoe Bay, Alaska down to the tip of South America in Argentina. Beyondall goals or personal expectations, David Sacher finished this epic ride on March3rd, 2010, more than two and a half months ahead of schedule.
But this trip was about more than just an epic bike ride; it was about doing good.By raising money for Akerfa, David joined a team of 7 other Akerfarepresentatives under 30 who are working to change lives in Africa throughbicycles.
“Bikes are the linkage needed to make people successful indeveloping worlds. They bring additional income to families livingon less than $2 a day. A bike provides access to healthcare andeducation and HOPE,” says CEO and Co-Founder of Akerfa, DustinMcBride (25).
To date, Akerfa has distributed more than 4,000 bicycles and over 700 bicycleambulance trailers in Zambia. According to the World Bank’s studies on thesetrailers, they save 1-4 lives PER DAY!
David has said from the beginning, "This ride is a reminder of what can beaccomplished through perseverance and a little hard work. It is a reminder ofwhat people are capable of, of what the human mind, body and spirit can achieve. We can make our lives how we dream them to be. I do not want to be guilty ofowning a life devoid of any living. Comfort and convenience are not synonymouswith happiness!"
