Children benefit tremendously by having their parents around more. Time that was previously spent gathering necessities can now be spent at home.

Walking to work can take 3 hours or more. By bicycle it’s only a 40 minute trip. This means more time spent with one’s family and money saved on transportation.

A nurse who has a bike can treat 10 patients in one day, while on foot she can see only 3. Her time is spent focused on patients, not the clock.

Projects Zambia

Zambia - Zambikes Company Profile:

Zambikes became an official Zambian company in September of 2007 by four founders and current Directors: Gershom Sikaala, Mwewa Chikamba, Vaughn Spethmann and Dustin McBride.

With two Zambian and two American Directors, Zambikes has had the advantage of combining the strength of American business practices with a thorough understanding of Zambian culture.

After the first 300 bicycles were sold and distributed in 2007, the Zambikes leadership team decided to establish a greater presence in the area. This was accomplished by purchasing land within the community of Kampampa, successfully completing the construction of an Assembly and Production Facility and effectively doubling sales in 2008.

In 2009, Zambikes distributed more than 2,500 bicycles and further expanded its product line to include both bicycle ambulance and cargo trailers. Both models of trailers were designed to be manufactured within the Production Facility by the trained Zambikes team members. In total, the team manufactured, sold and distributed more than 700 ambulance trailers and cargo trailers in their first year of production.

Operations:

Zambikes appeals to multiple target markets through its mission to not only build bikes, but to change lives. A large portion of sales is placed by companies and organizations in need of transportation assistance for their employees and/or volunteers. Zambikes also meets the needs of individuals in and around Zambia by providing access to bicycles through sales outlets and micro-finance partners.

Social Business:

Zambikes has a unique and unparalleled business model within Zambia. Through a partnership with the US non-profit organization, Akerfa, Zambikes was founded and operates as a for profit company within Zambia in order to benefit the surrounding communities.

Zambikes is able to accomplish this through its employee training programs and the reinvestment of all year-end profits back into the company and surrounding communities.

Nobel Peace Prize winner of 2006, Muhammad Yunus, advocates that the only way to break the cycle of poverty is through social business. Social businesses operate and compete with any and all regular for profit businesses while ensuring profits go back into the community rather than into the hands of a few shareholders. Additionally, the company must be run with the community benefit in mind.

Zambikes strives to provide the highest quality products and customer service to Zambians in order to positively affect Zambia and improve the quality of life of each individual they serve. To view our high quality products please click the button below.
